Concord Jottings

     May 2006

We've waited, we hoped for, we anticipated and it's finally here.

Spring in Springville!!!

The arrival of Spring has been long awaited by the Concord Historical Society and we are anticipating GREAT things.

THE ANNEX

The owners of "Pops Sports Bar" are giving us the lumber from the old shed on former Robinson Knife property. With the help of our Members and the wonderful and extensive help from "Butch" Wittmeyer it's coming down. It will be an authentic but a cheap way to get the aged lumber needed to work on the Annex. Plans are being made and work will start soon. Watch it take shape!!

THE MUSEUM

The grounds around "the Annex" are shaping up and the creek is now secure. Thanks again to our loyal Members. Jennie, Bob and Coleen are getting the grounds spic and span with all those flowers and trees planted are showing off nicely.

Again thanks to our generous friend Jim Smith of American Wire Tie Co. we now have the newest addition to our groundsan authentic "Two Holer". Tim Taylor and helpers have the foundation ready and thanks to the expertise of our reliable friend George Donhauser, the little building arrived in one piece. It needs some repair and painting and the ladies are already planning curtains, carpeting and flower boxes. Not only will it be the only antique out house on Main Street, it will be the most eye-catching. Thanks to all!

Joe Yaeger with the help of Gertrude Forde, Grace Gentner and David Batterson has almost completed the information for the boxes, for self tours at the Museum. Come in, listen and be impressed. Joe has been involved in professional broadcasting and it certainly shows. Even our former Supervisor, Ron Wendel was impressed!

MUSEUM OFFICE

Don Orton and Jeff Forester have been working on the new computer software program so that with "the speed of light" we'll be able to locate any of our artifacts with ease. Wouldn't Christopher Stone and Icahbod Foster marvel at our world? And without people like them we wouldn't be here. It will be 200 years in 2007 since Christopher arrived and Icahbod followed in 1811.

CHS

Our May meeting was a visit to "Buss" Nunweiler's beautiful garden and home. Oh, that someday our grounds could be half as wonderful! It was a fun evening and the weather was perfect (also -the treats we enjoyed!)

Lee's hours have been cut due to her request and the federal budget cut so we may be calling for volunteers. Get ready!

INTERVIEWS

We have been interviewing people for their Concord Memories and have more than 30 videos completed. Have you thought about sharing your memories? Tom Geelan was hidden talent up on Townsend Road until we got him for a Member. He is doing all of the professional work. We will also be interviewing for Memories of the Leland House in the Carriage House at the Dairy Festival. Wouldn't you like to be part of our heritage?

DAIRY FESTIVAL

We will be sharing our yard at the Museum with Harry Rucker and his War Time Vehicles, the Lutheran Church youth group, with the free lunches and one of our Boy Scout troops. Our Museum. & Carriage- House will also be open for visitors. Helen Saville has also promised to share her spinning talent on the side porch.

As you all know, Dave Batterson is the new Town Historian and surely is enjoying it. He's a great representative for the Town of Concord and will be doing walking tours of Springville for the Dairy Festival.
