Concord Jottings
               Summer 2006

Slow down, catch your breath – remember – we still have more great summer weather ahead, as well as Western New York’s glorious Fall Days!!!!

Here at Concord Historical Society we've had our share of busy weeks.

DAIRY FESTIVAL

As usual, in June we were very busy with the Dairy Festival. Our "local help" mowed, planted and weeded and we even house cleaned a bit.
With our 'friends' from the Salem Lutheran Church we had visitors galore enjoying their "free" lunches and our hospitality. It was wonderful to have even more visitors than last year. With Helen Stock in charge of the Concord Historical Society wagon and Mr. Grimm with his beautiful horses, we were well represented in the Parade.

FOURTH GRADERS

Our local 4th graders paid us their usual visit just before school closed. We received great letters from them telling us what they enjoyed most. What great kids and teachers we have in Springville. We should count our blessings we live here.

WELCOME

Although our number of 'out of town' visitors seem to be down, we still have nearby visitors to the Museum and Lucy Bensley Library. Perhaps it is the price of gasoline that affects it but mail requests continue. Mary Riley and also Tara Riese who are helping out will be seen busy at the Library. Lee and Don are busy accessioning at the Museum. Someday, maybe will be current!!!! Incidentally, Grace has the 'new Fall' schedule out for the Museum. Don't forget to check your date.

INTERVIEWS

Our interviews program is still going on. I believe Ron Wendel and Dr. Bob Dygert were our latest candidates. If you have a tale or two to tell, give us a call.

OUR MILL STONE

The wonderful 'mill stone' from Kim Sagebarth's property has been refurbished and placed in our backyard near the creek. There's a wonderful history connected with this stone but there are several elusive details we need to clarify before we can write the story. The mill was in existence in the 1800's and some positive details are hard to track down. No matter what, it's a wonderful gift. Phil Feraldi, one of our 4th grade teachers and a member of the Sardinia Historical Society, was just a "tad" green with envy when he saw the stone!

A TELEPHONE CALL

We heard from a 'Life Member' the other day by the name of Chris Michaels, who is a descendant of Pop Warner. He has offered to share some of his family treasures with us. We thank him for his generosity.

THANKS!

We thank all those that have helped so long and diligently with the tearing down of the old shed at Robinson Knife. Under Dave Batterson's guidance and persistence the old shed is down and the lumber is ours. Thanks to the new owners and all that helped. We're almost afraid to start naming all that helped for fear of missing someone. They included Dave Batterson Sr., Dave Batterson Jr., Donald (Butch) Wittmeyer, Craig Tucker, Gary Tillinghast, Adam Tillinghast, Mike Hannon, Joe Krzemien, Tom Irish and some of the Springville Door & Window employees. Good job!! Well Done!! Incidentally lots of money saved.

SPECIAL MEETING

We will be calling for our Officers to attend a special ‘Budget Meeting' early in August At this time we will be planning our objectives and expenditures for 2007.

MISSING IN ACTION

We have had inquiries from different sources and have been unable to find several articles that may have been borrowed and not logged out. If you have any of the articles mentioned, please return them to the Museum. They include:

bulletThe newspaper that came out when McKinley was shot.
bullet A "coin" from the Utrich House dating back into probably the 1800's that was found out west and given to us by Dick Woodworth.
bulletSeveral of the GI. and Collins Yearbooks, that were in last years display at the Museum.
bulletStatement of Lucy Bensley's pew rental at the Presbyterian Church, which she had requested to be given to her by the church. It is missing from our archives.
