Concord Jottings

Happy Valentines Day!
                     Mid Winter Issue 2003

Even though it's still WINTER (and how!) it's a good time to bring everyone up to date. Besides you're almost a captive audience. By the next newsletter our weather SHOULD be better!

DECEMBER

We helped with the double decker bus rides to see the Lights of Springville by serving cookies and hot chocolate to the passengers. The Library looked very festive after SAGE decorated for us.

Our Annual Cookie Sale brought forth wonderful cookies from our Members and Faithful Friends. The first one through the door was Wes Chandler who came bringing cookies he baked himself. Next came Joe Krezmien with brimming trays of beautiful cookies that Jeanne had made. From then on it was a steady delivery of cookies and customers. At ten o'clock we had exactly 13 cookies left. Don't ever say we don't have the best cookie makers in Springville. Thanks to everyone that baked and helped and those that bought!

UPSTAIRS BALCONIES

If you haven't gotten a copy of "Balconies of Springville" yet, you're missing a chronicle of Springville’s history. Our supply is already over half gone. Better hurry and come in to pick one up or write us. On the spot purchase at the Library is $8.00 --mailed would be $9.50. Gertrude did such a fine job getting this published.

JOSEPH MAUL

It is with sadness that we make mention of the passing of our dear Friend and Member Joseph Maul on January 16, 2003. Joe was a devoted Member for many, many years and worked for many causes. He especially enjoyed helping when the 4th Graders came. Our Christian Sympathy goes out to Ruth, Joel and Jean and all their Families. He and his smile will truly be missed.

THANKS

Our Thanks go out again to Connie (Bensley) and John Hume and Grace Bart for their generous donations to the Historical Society. It is the donations and gifts from them and many others that help make the Society great. Thanks to everyone that has given to us over the past year.

BIG MOVE

The big move of books from the Museum to our Lucy Bensley Library has been completed. Thanks to our "Professional Movers" Don and Bob along with the help of Shirley, Gert, Elsie, Lee and Marg. The books are now in our beautiful, new locked bookcases. What treasures we found when we moved. Many of the books that we thought were questionable have turned out to be real collectors items. How proud and happy our Lucy Bensley would be to see her Library back with books made available to many.

DUES

Dues are due for our yearly Members. Please don't forget to send your dues to Elsie Smith, P.O. Box 30, East Concord, New York 14055. Seniors and Regulars - - If we don't hear from you, It will be a sad Good Bye.

CALENDAR

We're attaching our calendar for 2003. Hopefully we've included everything, but you will notice that a few things aren't quite firmed up yet.

WOODSIDE

Plan on attending our two "Woodside Meetings". George Geiger along with Lillian Geiger's documentation will be our prime sources of information. George's relatives, the Browns were long associated with Woodside and we need your input also, if you have any.  Judy Wright will be getting permission for us to have a 'potluck' picnic at Woodside. Join us for fun and Informational meetings.

WEBSITE

Check out the information on our new Website. Glenn Cooley, President and owner of E&M Engineers and Surveyors is now in charge of our Website. We have new keywords for search engines so that we can be more easily reached and we will be in several existing databases. Find us at www.townofconcordnyhistoricalsociety.org.

TOWN OF CONCORD PICTORIAL

At this point in time, one or newest projects consists of getting ready to publish a book of pictures of old and existing parts of the Town of Concord. We're just getting organized but start thinking about old pictures you have that could be Included. We will need the year, or as close as possible, the place and the names of as many of the people as possible In each picture. We will scan the pictures and give them back immediately. Sound like fun!

NOTICE

Now that our Library is empty, we will be refurbishing that room before we decide what it will be used for.

This year only the Museum and the Genealogical Center will be closed on Sunday because of this, but it will always be open by appointment.                        .

Plans are being made for sponsoring a program at the Elementary School. More information to follow.
